Selecting the right designer is important. The designer is the one who translates your vision of a website into reality and provides the recommendations that will get the best results. Here are some things to look for when making a choice...

The designer must have experience in web page design. While the designer should have a working knowledge of the "techie" elements of designing for the Internet (things like HTML, manipulation of graphics and animations, interactive forms, etc.), the designer should design for the visitor (customer) and not just throw in techie design elements because he/she knows how to do it. The designer should understand the important difference between "flash" and "content."

The designer should have experience in Customer Relations and the difference between marketing with printed material, and marketing on the web. Not all printed materials transfer directly to web page design. Knowledge of the software and hardware tools available to convert existing documents to web-ready content is essential to reduce costs associated with migration to the web.

The designer should be familiar with software options, such as the variety of web browsers, email programs and use design tools that allow for cost effective design and minimize the time needed to meet client needs, while allowing for cost sensitive changes.

The best designers listen carefully to the client's needs and help educate clients about the terminology and options, in a friendly, comprehensive manner. The designer should not talk "techie" and over the head of the client. By educating , the designer helps to empower the client which allows them to control their own site for content if they choose to do so.

The designer should demonstrate abilities to project costs, project time needed and meet mutually defined and aligned budgetary expectations. There should be no surprises or disappointments if the communication is two-way and clearly documented.

A designer needs to be available for post production deliverables such as site-updates, cutting edge upgrades, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

The designer should also be familiar with a variety of "search engines" ( e.g. Yahoo or Alta Vista, etc.), the placement of your site with these engines on the Net, and understand the process for selecting key words to enable the web community to find your site.

The designer ought to have a variety of styles to create a site which is attractive, easy to navigate, time-efficient, user-responsive, flexible and reflects the "personality" of the client or their business.
